Department of History of Art started its education life with 36 students in the 2009-2010 academic year and currently has a second education undergraduate programme and graduate education master's and doctoral programmes, except for four active classes in the first education of formal education. The department currently employs 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 3 assistant professors and 3 research assistants.
Our students are trained to be aware of the responsibility of being an Art Historian with the branch courses taught by focusing on various subjects and periods in the departments of Turkish and Islamic Arts, Byzantine Art, Western Art and Contemporary Arts.
In the theoretical courses where the history of art is explained in a chronological framework and in a questioning perspective by discussing it with scientific methods, the historical and cultural environmental awareness of our students is increased by making use of the physical facilities of Safranbolu (UNESCO 1994) settlement texture where the city is located. The location of the region in general (Paphlagonia) is also very important in terms of research and analysis of the cultural heritage it hosts.
Graduates of the Department of Art History, as experts and researchers, can work in institutions under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey and other public education and research institutions, cultural institutions affiliated to foundations supported by the private sector, and conservation boards established within the municipalities. In addition to the fields such as libraries, archives, art galleries, etc. that require knowledge of art history, graduates who have a good level of foreign language skills will have the opportunity to be employed in areas such as tourism guide, counselling in the private sector, provided that they obtain a guidance certificate.
Students who have completed their undergraduate education have the opportunity to continue their master's and doctoral programmes of the Department of Art History if they wish and provided that they fulfil the necessary conditions. Our undergraduate and graduate students can also participate in excavations and surveys in our country.
