Ibn al-Fāriz, a famous poet of Sufi literature, whose poetry deals with the idea of wahdat al-wujūd (unity in being), symbolised divine love and love with the attributes and characteristics of material wine in his famous Hamriyya ode. In the first couplet of the ode, Ibn al-Fāriz says that he was enraptured by the wine he drank in memory of his beloved before the creation of the universe, and throughout the poem he explains the wine of love with different characteristics. There are about twenty-five translations and commentaries of the qasida identified so far. About fifteen of these translations and commentaries in Arabic, Persian and Turkish were written in Ottoman Turkish.
With this study, a new translation written in Ottoman Turkish in the early years of the Republic has been brought to light. Written in 1937, the work includes the translation of Mollā Jāmī's Persian rubais (quatrains) on the Hamriyya ode and the translation of Ibn al-Nahwī's tahmis (quintet) on the Hamriyya ode. Dr. İnce’s study, which presents three translations together, offers the reader a transcription of the work to the Latin alphabet and a review.
